'' Iyannough,....I Mean Hyannis"
A Wampanoag Indian Chief named Iyannough, listened
to our ancestors slaughter their ancient language. A town was
given his name. Hyannis was born, - - - the name being close enough
for sure, the chief was thankful, though forlorn. Thankful it was
his language, not people, that had been slaughtered. Forlorn,
that their land, and souls, were tattered and torn.
Now angry tourists swear and blow their horns. On tarred
byways, over the Indian's old pathways, they too had become
forlorn. Toward the sea shore they were drawn. They could not
drive fast enough to leave the city behind. It came right along with
them in cars both in front and behind. All thought Hyannis would
relieve their dread, - - - though there was nothing he could do, . . .
as "Iyannough" was long since dead.
